VPN with hyperthreading CPU hangs Windows XP

I have a new Dell 8300 Dimension desktop. One of first
applications I installed was softID/VPN so that I can
logon to work from home. About 50% of the times I try to
logon to work via softID/VPN, the machine hangs. I
restored the machine to just after the softID/VPN install
and still get the hangs.

Since this works on my Dell laptop running Windows XP, I
thought that maybe it might be an OS issue with
hypertheading enabled. Sure enough, when I disabled
hyperthreading the problem went away.

Anyone have any other suggestions on how to fix this. Or,
any suggestions on how to get Microsoft to look into this?

Why are you so sure that it's an MS issue? Do your other apps work with
hyperthreading on? Then perhaps I suggest that you insure that you have the
latest Cisco client, and if it's still an issue contact Cisco for support.

Yes - all other applications work with hyperthreading on.
I'm not 100% sure if Windows XP issue or an Intel CPU
issue. I did find an SP2 fix (KB817589) that causes some
TV tuner card/app to hang when hyperthreading is on.
Microsoft says this is an OS issue that will be fixed in
XP-sp2. My best guess is that this is another Windows XP
issue with hyperthreading on.

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you talk about
the "latest Cisco client". I'm not aware of any Cisco
client that's being run.

You should check with the vendor for softID/VPN to make sure they don't
have any known issues and fixes for this.

My understanding is that softID/VPN is a Cisco piece of software. It's not a
Microsoft product. Just because a utility is on your system doesn't mean it
was authored by MS.
