I have a W2K Server (SP4) that is connected to the internet via an SMC
router, using a DSL link. On the inside of this SMC firewall/router are 5
workstations, each getting their DHCP addresses from the W2K Server.
Everything works fine.

I now want an incoming PPTP VPN connection, so I tried to set one up on the
server, under 'New connection'. But it said I needed to use Routing and
Remote Access, so I tried that instead. After the first few prompts it says
'Here are your existing connections, which one do you want to use' and
displays '<no internet connection>' and '192.168.2.101' (ie: the server
itself).

QUESTION: Why is there no internet connection? The internet is on the router
at address 192.168.2.1, and works fine at all stations. Why can't RRAS see
it? Am I missing some setup? Thanks in advance,

It's asking about the internet connection on the server itself- often the
server will have two lan cards, one or the internal network and one off out
to the internet, so it would want to know which is the internet one. You
only have one card and a router, so in this case you don't have the two to
pick from. It won't show you the router you have. Its ages since I set this
up on our machine at work (which works the same way as you have) and I can't
remember which option I picked offhand - probably the 192.168... connection,
so give it a try.
The other thing you'll need to remember is get your router to forward tcp
port 1723 and protocol 47 into your server, else everything will arrive at
the router and it won't know what to do - also remember to allow dialin
access for the user account(s) you want to vpn in.

The basic clue is "Do not use the VPN Server option in the setup wizard".
This will cause you all sorts of grief. It is designed for a machine which
is acting as a VPN server ONLY.

Just configure your server for remote access. That will set up the WAN
miniports for VPN. Check your server config by making a VPN connection from
a local LAN client.

When this works, you can forward PPTP from your router and connect to
the router's public IP, as James described.
