We recently changed from Win NT 4.0 Server to a 2K box. Everything seem to
be working fairly well except for the VPN. The connect speed on NT was
100Mbs, but the 2K shows 9600. Being a newbie, have not been able to find
the answer. Can anyone help ? (Remember Newbie) Thanks !

Are you sure you are checking the speed at the right place as in the connection
for the vpn and not the lan. Have you noticed a tremendous slowdown in
throughput through your vpn? Do users connect OK??. If you are using DSL you may
need to adjust the MTU on the DSL connection to around 1400. --- Steve

The Win98 client is using the exact same dial-up settings for the new
server. The server has a DSL, to router, to hub.The only thing that changed
is the VPN connection on the new server. The speed is being checked in
status of dial up window. And yes, there has been a big slow down in the
accounting software, also, connecting is no problem. Any Ideas ? Thanks

Reduce your MTU as I suggested to see if that helps on your dsl router. Does the
new VPN server also double as file and application server or is it strictly for
VPN? --- Steve

Will try MTU adj. this week end. The server is the only one on the net.
Roles are DC, DNS, and application server for accounting software. DHCP is
handled by the router.
The VPN speed change is strange because all IP's and settings were copied
exactly from the NT 4.0 box. The server has 1 gb memory, and a 64 /3200 AMD
processor, 2 WD Raptors in Raid 0. Should be able to handle things OK, Right
??
Thanks for your suggestions.

Should handle it no problem. I suggest the MTU change because there may be a
difference in the way W2K manages tcp/ip versus NT4.0 and for dsl connections MTU
setting can often cause problems with packet fragmentation handling.

I suggest you consider enabling dhcp on your W2K server since it is a domain
controller, particularly if you have any W2K/XP Pro domain members since they rely
heavily on dns and improper implementation of dns can cause all kinds of problems
with them logging on and accessing resources. --- Steve

Going to do some serious experimenting this (3 day) week end. I had the dhcp
on the server to start with, so will go back to it. Also most articles I
have read use two nic's instead of a router. Is this better or worse than
using my NetGear router ? We have 5 clients using Win98 and 2 on Win XP Pro.
I don't think I mentioned the vpn is used for writing checks at home. Thanks
again for your Help

Randy

You're probably better off keeping the Netgrear box in your situation. If
you use something else you can replae it with a different brand of model,
but stay with the same "caoncept" of doing things. Every other method will
be much more complicated.

I agree with Phillip. I use a Netgear myself to port forward to my vpn server at home
and like the idea of having a perimeter device protecting the network. -- Steve
