We have a remote user who has a cable modem at home and
wants to connect to our facility using our VPN.
She has Windows 2000 SP4 and has disabled her firewall.
When she builds the VPN connection using the Network
Connection Wizard, filling in the radio button (Connect
to a private network using the Internet) and Do not dial
the initial Connection and filling in the IP address of
the VPN, the icon that is displayed on her desktop has a
red X on it rendering it unusable.
When going to the Network and Dial Up Connections screen,
the Type display for the VPN is dial up instead of
Virtual Private Network. and the status says Unavailable
Device Missing.
Obviously the system thinks she wants a dial up
connection set up instead of a VPN, but as explained, she
is setting it up for a VPN. Can someone help with this?
I was thinking that maybe a driver is corrupted but my
knowledge basically stops here.

I think you will find that you DO have to Dial up First. When you say:
" filling in the radio button (Connect to a private network using the
Internet) and Do not dial the initial Connection "
That that is wrong. You have to connect to the internet before you can
establish the VPN.

Open device manager, click View...Hidden Devices,
expand Network Adapters and see if you have working
WAN miniports for PPTP and L2TP. If they're not there, just put
in the Win2K CD and do a "null upgrade" to get things put
back in place.
