Running Xp pro on home and work. Trying to connect from
home which is on a lynksys router to my work computer
through a netgear router that allows VPN. I configured
the work router (which has a Static WAN IP) to send
inbound services port 1723 to my fixed LAN IP address of
my computer. I set up the wizard on the work computer to
be able to receive incoming connections. and I set up
home wizard to connect to the static IPofrouter:port# I
get error 769 CanT be reached. I don't have a server. Is
the work computer not able to authenticate or do I have
the wrong port or do i have the VPN connection configured
wrong? help. I called netgear and they cant help.

Make sure it is TCP Port 1723 and double check the public IP address
of your work computer.

Note that some routers may have issues with incoming PPTP
connections... (take a look at the www.dslreports.com forum for your
router manufacturer and see if there is any discussions about your
current model and VPNs).

Assuming of course you can get past the 'An internal error
has occurred: The local user database handle is corrupt'
problem which no-one seems to have a (practical) fix for!

Try to boot from the XP cd and _install_ and _repair_. This brings up
your local user database again.

That would be a reinstall, which is the only workaround, but it is
destructive...

Contact MS PSS or your OEM to see if they can offer a supported fix
that doesn't involve reinstalling Windows...

Come on Microsoft - pull your thumb out and this this cock-
up fixed. Is SPxx on it's way??

There are an absolute miriad of posts re this subject (on
many bbs, ng and your own site), surely it must warrant
your urgent attention?

Even some MS feedback would be a nice touch!
