VPN server on win xp home ?

I have gone thru several web page insttructions for setup.

I am going thru a Linksys wrt54g.router which I just upgraded the
firmware.

I am testing it internally on another workstation with XP pro.
the router is set to forward on port 1723.
I am using the external address on the router, have tried using
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1723 as well, l it immediately fails.
Also have tried logging in directly to the internally ip 192.168....

On the proposed VPN server(XP HOME) I went thru the set up connection
wizard. allowing login account holder acccess.

I cannot think of anything else
Is there hope ?
 
I am not sure what you want to do? What do you mean "have tried using xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1723"? Do you try to setup VPN or use Remote desktop? If you are using RDC, you need to open port 3389.

do you have router or firewall. VPN Error 800 could be GRE issue. these links may help,

I get this error
800: Unable to establish the VPN connection.
