VPN/RDP -- "SHIFT" key stuck??

Okay, this is a weird one. I've been using RDP over a VPN connection to my
office with no problems for a long time now prior to this issue. This
problem started sometime maybe in the past month. Both the local and the
remote machines are running XP Pro with all current updates.

The problem: All applications on the remote machine act as if I have the
SHIFT key depressed. No, I don't mean that all the letters I type are in
upper case -- that does NOT happen. The SHIFT key functions properly with
respect to the letters and characters appearing on the screen. No, I mean
that when I try to use the arrow keys to move around in a document,
everything that I arrow over becomes highlighted as if the SHIFT key were
depressed while I was arrowing.

To demonstrate my problem, open any Word document, click in the middle of a
paragraph, hold down your SHIFT key, and push a few arrow keys. The text
becomes highlighted wherever you arrow when you hold down SHIFT, right?
Well, I'm not holding down a SHIFT key when I arrow around documents, but my
remote machine seems to think I am.

As I said, this has not always happened. It started recently. I have not
changed anything in the RDP configuration (although I've looked through the
config options and nothing seems to apply). I have tried my RDP connection
to the office from a different XP Pro machine and it does not have this
problem. The remote machine does not do this when I am logged on to it
locally. Obviously something is at issue with my local configuration.

Any ideas?

I have a similar problem as well, and I'm still searching
for answers.

Found out that if you release your NUMLOCK, you'll be
able to move your cursor keys fine. Unfortunately, you
can't use shift to highlight text etc. Not the best
solution...

If anyone has an answer, please post it.

How strange. You're exactly right. Turning off NUMLOCK makes the problem go
away. Now to figure out why it just started doing that and why it does it
when accessing my RD machine from this machine and not from another one I
used this weekend. Weird.

Thanks for the info!!

Oh thank , I am not crazy after all!
Ditto, over VPN to my office, although non vpn in the office does it also.
Just started in the last month. Only thing I can figure is it was one of the
critical updates installed .

Yes turning off the numlock does help that.. Better solution anyone?????
