I have setup VPN on my network and many in my staff are using it fine from
home using their DSL or cable modem except for one user who is using DSL
with earthlink. I tried several laptops at her home but no luck. When I
login it finds the server and it says "verifying username and password"
then it comes back that the server is not responding and disconnect. I can
use VPN with her login username from someone's else house but not hers. I am
guessing it has to do with the router but do not know where to look. Please
advice.

Everybody is using Win2000 professional

This is an easy but not a practical solution. The router has a firewall the
blocks certain ports.

Is she using some standard linksys router, something from
cisco, or like a home network generic cable modem/router?

It might be that your router or equipment at work needs to
be configured to accept incoming communications from the
range of IP address this CEOs ISP gives out.

Can you ping into the server once the VPN is up but before
you log in? Remember, "connection timed out" is a problem
on the way back TO your location, "destinatinon
unreachable" is a problem on the way FROM your location.

I do not remember the router name but it is something I bought her from
ComUSA. Since she can connect to the server at the office through VPN and
then it times out, only from her home but works somewhere else, I have a
feeling it is either the router or earthlink permission configuration
problem. My questions is if there is a port on the router I need to open to
allow incoming VPN traffic to go through? I do not think it has anything to
do with earthlink.

Are you blocking any outbound ports on the firewall/router? You shouldn't
need anything open inbound.

Why don't you bypass the router, as it was suggested, or start over
resetting the router to narrow your search? Or you can test the router and
laptop on another ISP line - from your home for instance?

I have more than one computer. I need the router. I can use the router on
another ISP but I thought the solution is easier than I thought.
