VPN PPTP Running Slow

I recently set up two 3Com VPN routers to replace a dedicated 56k line
between two local offices. All PC's are Win2k/XP Pro. After setting
up the connection (across a 384k/384k) Internet line, my ping time
improved over the 56k line (avg 38ms to 25ms).
However, when I run an application over the VPN line, it is slower than
the 56k.
The subnets are different and I have no problem with communication
between the two locations, just an impossibly slow performance of the
application.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What application? Can you post a network trace somewhere?
 
Medical program called Medent. I don't have any other apps to test to
know if it is the program or the connection unfortunately. I'm
thinking of installing pcAnywhere temporarily to see how that works to
try and narrow down if it is app related or connection related.
According to the support folks for Medent, it is not related to that,
but you know how that goes. May be, may not be.
