I would like to setup a VPN Server and have client access
it from a different location. I would like to know what
port number I have to open in order for the client to
access the VPN Server.

I am behind a linksys router.

I f you are using PPTP, you need to allow tcp port 1723. But a PPTP
connection will fail if the firewall/router blocks GRE, which is IP protocol
47.

If your router does not mention GRE by name or by protocol number, look
for switches like PPTP pass-through or even VPN pass-through mode.

For PPTP there are two settings required. TCP port 1723 and the GRE protocol #47. Depending on the router, this may just be
refered to as PPTP.

L2TP on the other hand cannot traverse a NAT router unless you are using a Windows Server 2003 and clients with the NAT-
Traversal update applied. For more info, 818043 L2TP/IPSec NAT-T Update for Windows XP and Windows 2000
