VPN ..not getting default gateway address

I am using vpn client of windowws for last 2 years.but
from yesterday on wards when i connect to the vpn my sytem
is registering to vpn but I am unable to ping with the
remote machine.when i check the ipconfig it was noticed
that my system didn't get the default gateway address.How
can I fix it

Try doing ipconfig /all before you connect to the vpn and I bet you see an
default gateway or you probably would not be able to connect to the vpn server
in the first place. In W2K you can configure your built in vpn client connectoid
to use default gateway of the vpn server or not. I suspect however you have a
different problem. Just because you can not ping a remote machine does not mean
a problem with the default gateway. It could be a firewall/IP filtering issue or
the computer itself is not responding to pings. Tracert can also be used to
troubleshoot bottlenecks in network access. --- Steve
