VPN needs a couple of minutes to become usable

Yes, we ran into this when we set up a PPTP VPN between Win2K
machines.

We solved the problem by using a static IP address for the Client and
putting an entry in the HOSTS table on both the VPN Server and the
Client.

In fact we use static addresses for all the machines on our
peer-to-peer local network because that speeds up the network browsing
process.

Interesting idea. Our computers have fixed IP addresses but are DHCP-served
by a campus server. Coming into the VPN, I am of course coming in from
home.
