I have a new computer running XP Home (which was loaded
inadvertently instead of XP PRO by my comp. builder) and I
work in a home office. I use a tunnel and VPN (Blue Ridge
Networks and Citrix) to access my corporate network and
intranet. ALL FUNCTIONS ARE SO SLOW I CANNOT WORK! My
processor is a 2.8GH Intel P4 with 512RAM, my internet
connection is a cable/modem/Linksys VPN router.
My old computer is a P2, 1/5th the speed of the new
system, running Windows 98 4.10 with 1/2 the RAM yet works
quickly through the same router and cable. The problem
with this computer is 2-fold: 1) this computer is borrowed
and the owner needs it back, 2) it does not have a current
version of Office which I need to work on my network. I
need to make a decision whether to give the old computer
back to its owner and hope I can solve the latency problem
on the new system OR see if the lender will accept my new
$1000+ computer in place of the old one and then I will
have to transfer applications, upgrade Office and some
hardware. (What is the latest version of Office I can run
on Win 98?)
Any help solving the latency issue will be greatly
appreciated!
Here is what I have tried based on suggestions from Blue
Ridge, Citrix and my corporate net. admin.:
.. Turning off firewalls = no improvement
.. bypassing the router = no improvement
.. downloading a program recommended by Blue Ridge to boost
speed = slight improvement
.. disabling Norton antivirus = no improvement
.. increasing system resources [reducing # of startup
programs=no improvement, turning off quick-launch=no
improvement, upgrading system resources=no improvement]-
doesn't seem to be a resources issue since the old
computer has 1/2 the RAM and runs fine
.. running other network profiles (windows 98 & 95=slight
improvement) (WINNT=no improvement)
.. downloading same file onto both systems, the time was 4x
on the old system, sort-of showing that the tunnel IS
faster on the new system.
I don't know what else to try. Would XP Pro give a
significant improvement? Is there some network or Internet
Explorer setting that is bogging down transmission? Is
there something working in the background that is slowing
things down. Is XP belaboring encryption? Is this latency
characteristic of XP or is it something on my PC???
Please Help!
