VPN issue when connecting from high speed but fine on dialup

Windows 2000 pro laptop works great using a dialup connection vpning into a
Windows 2000 server. When I connect this same machine up to a high speed
connection and VPN in it works but..... can't ping or do anything on the
network. I have other machines with same setup that work fine. I've tried a
lmhost file and that doesn't work.

What kind of high-speed connection? Is your client/computer behind a
router/firewall that isn't set to allow the VPN traffic outbound?

It's behind something at a hotel or even at my home where I have cable. I
have a firewall but I'm not blocking anything. Wouldn't I not be able to
initiate the the VPN connection at all?

Not necessarily. Unless you know for sure you're on a network that blocks no
outbound traffic (and your personal firewall doesn't block anything outbound
either) there's no guarantee that this will work - if you say dialup works
but broadband doesn't, it's likely not your computer's firewall unless it's
configured differently per connection.

Guess I'm not following you.

My windows 2000 firewall is turned off. My broadband connection firewall
allows all outbound connections. Like I said I can make the VPN connection
fine it's when I try to do something on that connection.

OK - you did mention a hotel connection, too.
What errors do you get when you try to ping your server, etc., by IP
address?

Just gives me host unreachable.

Then something is wrong, because if you can't ping something on the remote
network by its private IP address when the tunnel is allegedly established,
it ain't established (name resolution isn't the issue here). What kind of
VPN are you using? Are you using the same connectoid regardless of dialup or
broadband connection? Have you talked to the network admins, presuming you
have some? Are you 100% sure your ISP is not blocking ports on your
broadband connection?

I am the admin. The ISP on the broadband I'm testing on is insight so I'm
sure I'll get no help there.
I'm using the simple VPN connection within WIndows 2000.

I don't know what "on insight" means. Can't they just tell you whether
they're blocking any ports? I'm somewhat at a loss here, sorry.

Insight is a Cable/Internet Provider. Their "support" varies greatly
depending on which Tech you get at whichever time of day. But, I am
reasonably sure they are not blocking anything,...I was going to say
"...because they don't know how...", but that wouldn't be fair to some of
their Techs I've run accross that are pretty good.
