VPN Internet Issue

Why is it that whenever I connect to my works VPN I can
no longer do anything on the internet?

I have full access to anything inside of my works network
such as file shares and such. But I can no longer browse
the web.

Is this the same for all VPN networks?

You can alter this by changing your settings in the VPN connection
properties. By default, the connection sends all traffic over the
connection. To keep your Internet gateway alive, you clear the "use default
gateway.." box in the connection properties (Advanced TCP/IP settings).
