VPN inconsistency

I am experiencing some frustrating inconsistency with the VPN connection from my home to my office. Perhaps someone can suggest a procedure to eliminate the inconsistency.

I am connected to the internet on a broadband, static ip connection (Sprint fixed wireless).

SOMETIMES when I launch my VPN client connection, I will then be unable to browse the internet. That is, with the VPN connection "live", when I launch a browser, the browser cannot find any web pages, behaves as if the internet connection is dead. As soon as I disconnect the VPN link, the browser is then able to find web pages normally.

ALSO, if I launch the web browser FIRST, and then launch the VPN link, all is well. I am able to continue browsing the web, AND my VPN link works fine.

Is there a setting I can make that will eliminate this inconsistency? I know how to deal with it, but I want to roll out a somewhat robust VPN procedure for a few mobile employees. Thanks.

Can't access the Internet while using VPN

Symptom: after establishing a VPN connection, you may not be able to access
the Internet because the VPN takes over your existing connection and all
traffic to use the VPN default gateway on the remote network. The remote
network may not allow VPN clients to access the Internet via their gateway.

Resolutions:
1) If you don't need to access the entire VPN resources, disable the "use
default gateway on remote network" option in the properties of the VPN
connection. To do that, go to VPN
Connection->Properties->Network->TCP/IP->Properties->Advanced-, uncheck
"Use default gateway on Remote Network".
2) Edit route table manually if you know how to or check routing page on
this web site.

Well, that worked in a way. (Your item #1; I did not try #2, don't understand it.) Now I have no trouble browsing the internet while the VPN link is active. However, now I cannot run two applications that worked previously via the VPN link: PCanywhere and MS Remote Desktop. So now the VPN link is not useful to me. Do I need to do #2 to make this work? BTW, now even if I undo #1, I cannot get back to the previous status, in which everything worked IF I launched a browser prior to launching the VPN link. Gene
