I have a new XP box with a Linksys BEFSR41 4 Port Router. I have dopwnloaded
and installed the newest firmware and it shows PPTP and IPSPEC. I have
configured my computer to accept from another computer, but I can't seem to
connect. I get error number 800. Does any one have any ideas what I need to
do. Obviously I am not well informed but would like to access mu home
desktop when I travel.

Please help!

Thanks in advance,
JIm

For PPTP VPN you need to be...

1. Running a VPN server on the XP box...
2. Forward TCP Port 1723 through the router to the XP boxes private LAN IP, which should be
static...
3. Enable "PPTP Pass Through"...
4. Call using the public IP of the router, ie. the IP assigned by your ISP...

Thanks for the info. The Server that comes with XP is ok, right? My IP is
dynamic, is static an absolute?

Thanks again,
Jim

Well, not absolute but if the XP box that is running the server reboots/restarts and grabs a
different DHCP assigned private LAN IP address from the Linksys router then the port forwarding
configuration in the router becomes meaningless. The IP assigned by your ISP to your router can be
dynamic or static. Static is best, but if they only provide a DHCP assigned IP then you can use one
of the dynamic DNS services that map a dynamic IP to an alias. I use No-IP.com, which works very
well. For additional information look at http://www.no-ip.com or this page...

http://www.remotenetworktechnology.com/ow.asp?Remote_Network_Home/Connections

that lists others, some FREE and some $$$$.

As an FYI, here is how I use PPTP VPN to access my home LAN with an iPAQ 3835 PocketPC. You may find
it interesting and possibly informative, or you may not...
