VPN error 678

Aftering dialing up to my ISP and upon connecting to my
VPN server I receive the following error Error 678: The
remote computer did not respond.

Yes, I specified the correct host name/IP of the VPN
server but still got the same error.

Has anyone experience this?
 
Can you ping the server through the Internet connection? If so, the
problem is probably the server setup.

Can you make a VPN connection to this server from a local (LAN) machine?
