When I connect my Windows 2000 Pro laptop to an internet service it assigns
the DNS of my ISP, which is right. But when I connect to a VPN tunnel it
will not use the internal DNS that is assigned to that connection. Instead
it still uses the ISP DNS. I checked IPCONFIG and it show the proper DNS
for the VPN connection. This problem doesn't occur on my Windows XP
systems. Does Windows 2000 have a problem or am I overlooking something.

Thanks.

The VPN server should assign the DNS to the client. if not, you may have DNS settings manually. This name resolution on VPN may help, http://www.chicagotech.net/nameresolutionpnvpn.htm

I recommend Brinkster for web hosting!

It is assigning the correct DNS to the VPN, but instead of using the VPN DNS for name resolution, it uses the LAN Connection DNS for resolution which is the ISP DNS. I have even manually entered the DNS servers in the VPN connection, but it still doesn't use the VPN DNS for name resolution.

Thanks.

Are you sure this is what happens or is it just a guess? Does it work
correctly if you use the FQDN of a machine?

My guess is that you do not have the correct DNS suffix configured in
the client.

It is assigning the correct DNS to the VPN, but instead of using the VPN DNS

I'm sure. Like I said it doesn't happen on my XP machines. I can ping the
FQDN of my smtp mail server and it tries to ping the external address. I
have also flushed the DNS cache but it still won't work. I can ping the IP
address of an internal client and it will work fine. Any ideas.

That rings a bell. There were changes made to the connection manager in
XP. I know it fixed a problem which W2k Pro clients had with the domain name
across VPN links.

On second thoughts, I think it was changes to the credentials manager
that solved the domain name problem. So it probably wouldn't affect DNS.
