Working at home with Windows XP pro, I can establish a VPN connection over
ADSL to my work place. However, when this connection is established, all my
network traffic routes down this path, meaning I am unable to browse the
Internet, or pick up my mail when the VPN is open. Is there a simple way
around this?

Thanks

Go into the VPN connection's Properties | Networking | Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) | Properties | Advanced. Un-check "Use default
gateway on remote network".

Two notes of caution:

1. If you VPN into a corporate network, tell the IT staff what you
want to do and ask them whether "split tunneling" (connecting
simultaneously to the VPN and the Internet on the same computer) is
allowed. Some companies forbid it because of the security risk to the
corporate network: your Internet access would be outside the corporate
firewall.

2. If the network that you VPN into has more than one subnet, you'll
need to define routes to other subnets after disabling the default
gateway on the VPN connection.

Hi Ian,

This is likely because when you make a VPN connection the default setting
is to "Use default gateway on remote network" Follow the steps below to
disable this:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.

2. Right-click your VPN connection, click Properties, and then
click the Networking tab.

3. Click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Properties, and then
click Advanced.

4. Click to unselect the "Use default gateway on remote network" check
box, and then click OK.

5. Click OK.
