Yahoooo... I made my VPN connection work... now part 2... I can't "see" my
work computer... I expected it to be like PC Anywhere, and the remote
computer's desktop would appear on my screen... Do I need to search for it?

Do a google search for "Remote Desktop"

I have read about Remote Desktop... some feel it's not needed just use VPN?
I downloaded RemoteDesktop for my Win2K machine... establish VPN connection,
open Remote Desktop.... User Name is computer name? or Network name?
domain name//computer ??
Thanks

You need VPN to use Remote Desktop. Username/Password is your user name
and password for the remote computer. Domain is the domain you wish
normally use at work.

A VPN connection lets you function as a network workstation as if you were
at a workstation at the office. The main use of a VPN connection is to
access shared files (and less commonly to print to a shared printer) at the
office. PC Anywhere and Remote Desktop are programs that let you remotely
run another computer as if you were sitting at that computer - it's screen
becomes you're screen, keyboard input goes to the remote, etc.

These are two distinctly different things. Remote Desktop can be run
through a VPN connection. I hope that clarifies it for you.

so establishing a VPN connection alone is worthless? Shd I use the same IP
address for both VPN & Remote Desktop? Or is one IP public to tunnel with,
the other private once I am in ?

No, you don't need VPN to use Remote Desktop.... I am not able to make a
connection just using remote desk top... I can try again tonite... any
secrets? My goal is to be able to work from home... I don't really need to
access the other PCs on my work network... but it would be convenient

in log in box.... Enter IP address in "COMPUTER" , user name is remote
computer's name, with password, is domain optional or necessary? When I pull
down browse for more computers... remote computer is not showing

By no means is a VPN worthless. VPN connections have many valuable uses.
Once connected by VPN you would use the name or internal IP of the computer
in the office to establish the Remote Desktop connection.

You don't know that. It's true that Remote Desktop does not, in itself,
require a VPN connection. However we often allow RD only though a VPN for
various reasons. Security is one. Additionally, when not used through a
VPN, routers and port forwarding issues at the workplace can be quite
involved particularly to support RD for multiple users.
