Hi,

I was able to setup vpn connection in my small office network using window
XP pro VPN server.
I connect to it properly and can see my vpn server and it resources.
On the client side, when I click on my Network Group I can see all the
computer connected that are on the server network. But when I click on any on
of them (other then the server) I get the following error message:
\\Computer_XXX is not accessible. You do not have permission to use this
network ressources.....
Now if I enter the ip address in the browser of a "Computer_XXX" (e.g.
192.168.2.100) I can see all the resources without any problem.
Same applies in the cmd window when I use "net view" . The name won't work
and give "system error 53" but with the IP address I can see all the
resource.
Same apply to any computer in the network trying to access the resources of
the VPN client. It works with the IP address but gets an error when i use the
name.
In conclusion, something is messed up with name resolution, how can I fix it ?

Thanks in advance for all the help
Alex

It is better to setup WINS for VPN name resolution. This link may help,

Robert,

Thanks for the feedback.
How do I configure VPN server with the IP addresses of the appropriate DNS
and WINS servers?
When I click on the property on the "Incomming Connection" all I have for
TCP/IP properties is the Network Access option (which is checked) and TCP/IP
address assignement which I have set from 192.168.2.20 to 192.168.2.27 for a
total of 8 connections.
Thanks again.

Sorry, I didn't read carefully. If you have XP as VPN host, WINS is not option. You may try to use lmhots. However, I would do IP mapping to access remote access.

How to use lmhostThe Lmhosts file is a local text file that maps Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to NetBIOS names of remote servers with which you want to communicate over ...

Robert,

Unfortunetly, my network is setup using DHCP. So lmhosts would not work
since IP addresses are dynamic. For lmhosts to work I would need to have
every computer use static IP which would be a problem since many user are
using their laptop (i.e if I set them up to use static ip, they will likely
have to revert to dynamic once their laptop is back at home or on another
network)

There must be a way of getting name resolution to work in VPN and a dynamic
IP addressing environment. Anyone at Microsoft has a solution ?

Thanks again for all the feeback.
