VPN: can ping NetBios from NetBeui but can't browse

As per the title, from one LAN (home) I can ping computers on another LAN
(work) via a VPN connection, but I'm unable to the work PCs via browsing
(Network places/neighborhood). I'm also unable to force them via
Start->Run->\\IPAddressOfWorkPC.

Per the Gibson site (GRC.com?), on the home network I set up
netbeui and disabled Netbios. But I've yet to do that on the work PCs. So
perhaps the problem is that the file/print sharing on the LANs is not the
same--the home one is using NetBeui, and work is using Netbios. Would that
account for the problem, and since Microsoft seems to be discontinuing
support for Netbeui, will using NetBeui ultimately be a failing strategy?
TIA. Here's some more info:

Home LAN and Work LAN each have new, identical VPN routers (Linksys model
BEFVP41) with identical firmware (approx Jan '03, which is newer than the
firmware on the site). As per Linksys's suggestion, I assigned the work
router and the home router different internal IP addresses. Both routers'
IP addresses are dynamic; therefore I've created domain names for them and
am using the Advanced Tab's DDNS Tab to designate the domain names, and have
set the VPN tab's Tunnel 1 accordingly (please let me know if I should
detail that); I've also set the highest security levels and have set an
(identical) encryption key for the tunnel 1 on each side. And using an
Advanced button I enabled NetBIOS broadcast and Keep-Alive.

As far as I know, the work PCs are not running firewalls.

FYI follow-up to my own post: This is working now, upon my moving back from
the Gibson spec.s a bit.

Hi Howard,

We would recommend using TCPIP (which provides NetBIOS over TCPIP). If the
VPN server is configured to hand out the WINS address used in the corporate
network, then the VPN client will get this and resolve NetBIOS names
through WINS.

You are correct that NetBEUI is being phased out.
