I've successfully created a VPN connection from my Windows XP Pro machine to
a Windows 2000 Pro machine, but when I can't access any shared resources
until I go to "Search" >>> "Computers or People" >>> "A Computer on the
Network".

After I punch in "server01", then I can access all shared resources as
normal.

Why is it that the "Search" function can find the server, and not "My
Network Places"?

Thanks for any help.

Because your computer doesn't have any way to browse your network. If you
use WINS in a domain environment, and can pass along the WINS server
information to your remote computer, you may stand a chance - but the
connection between your XP box and the other network isn't going to pass
along broadcast (NetBIOS) traffic.

Why did it work from the search option? ?, couldn't the NetBIOS browser
search for it by itself?? strange? I know it will work if the user supplied
IP address in the search field (NetBIOS over TCP will bypass the broadcast
problem), but searching for the NETBIOS name and finding it !! this is
strange. Any explanation ?

Searching has nothing to do with browsing - it just requires name
resolution. Browsing requires that NetBIOS traffic itself be allowed to pass
over the network connection...
