VPN and IP addresses

The VPN client can have a static IP or a dynamic IP which is provided by the
VPN Server. Again at the VPN Server you can have a set of static IP s or use
a DHCP for dynamic IPs. Does this answer your question?

I came in on this late, but I want to remind you that some routers, in
particular Linksys, do not support DHCP for a VPN - at least they
didn't a while back.

I keep trying to set up a VPN from work (Networked computer VPN "Server") to Home Network (VPN Client) both run through a broadband router. The one at work is a Netopia DSL and the one at home is a U.S. Robotics router for Cable modem. When I make a new connection from home (Client) to work (VPN Host { I think }) I keep getting an ERROR 800: Unable to establish the connection. etc..... Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Ensure that the TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE) for PPTP VPN connection
and UDP 500, UDP 1701 and UDP 4500 for NAT-T for L2TP VPN connection are not
blocked. If you are using IPSEC, then protocol 50 (ESP) needs to be
unblocked. Can you reach the VPN server by using ping?

Do you have firewall enabled and any of the ports mentioned are blocked?

You could also get this error if the firmware of the router is outdated as
mentioned in the following KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319108

Also check the following KB article which gives overview of VPN and some
trouble shooting methods

I am coming into this thread late so this may have already been
covered.

Turn off your personal firewall.

Years ago when I first implemented a PPTP VPN, I had a so-called
"personal firewall" installed that blocked the VPN. I had to turn it
off to get the VPN woirking.

Success! I had to contact the ISP for the work place they remotely configure the DSL connection for the router there and TADA it works great... VPN had to be set for availability with port 1723, didn't know an ISP could remotely configure a router. Hmm
