We have some trouble with users using XP Service Pack 2 that try to connect
to our VPN server. I had read in 891559 that it's not possible to access
VPN resources after installi service pack 2. Maybe anybody can help me
about to solve this situation. The VPN Server is Windows 2003 and we don't
have problems with machines with XP Service Pack 1.

Thanks a lot.

Can you access the resources by using IP? what do you receive is using net view \\serverip?

The user, in fact, never finish the VPN connection. It stops after the
"verifying username and password", and says that the server didn't respond.
I tried with another machine with SP 1 and works fine.

Thanks

I wish you posted the error code. Assuming you received error 800, this could be GRE issue. this page may help,

In fact, the error is the 721, but I think that it's not the GRE protocols,
because I try the same conecction with other machine and works very well

Thanks a lot for all your help

Hi!

I have been experiencing a similar problem with my XP SP2 enabled client.
Though everything else seemed to work just fine from within other machines
running different operating systems such as W2K etc. this one has never
managed yet to establish a proper connection to the VPN server (based on
Windows 2003 Server). After a particular period of time (approx. 30 seconds)
I would always be confronted with the "VPN error 800..." message. I have
tried almost everything by now to get it going: turned off my firewall,
checked all security settings, disabled auxiliary services and programmes,
exactly followed instructions in every article I could find to refer to this
issue and so on. The most strange aspect of all is the fact that I can verify
a proper connection to correct ports and DNS resolving from within my XP SP2
machine. Still, I never happen to see anything else but that annoying error
message. Thus, it appears to be a SP2 related problem.
I would like to know if anyone has managed to find a solution yet.

P.S. This is not a router related issue! Please don't tell my to check my
router and the like. I also appreciate you not
providing me with any sort of "learn.how.to.network-newbie.org" links and
tutorials of that kind.

Thank you in advance for all the tips and tricks you may share with me!

I have a similar situation:
Host:
DC1 on BellSouth T1 - Win2000 Server running RRAS with 5 open PPTP
tunnels. BellSouth T1 behind SMC firewall (or MultiTech firewall)
confured to pass TPC 1723 to DC1

Users:
Steve: (notebook) WinXp Pro on BellSouth DSL- connects fine, can map and
use all network resources.
Steve: (desktop) WinXp Home on BellSouth DSL- connects fine, can map and
use all network resources.

GA home offices:
Laura: WinXp Home on BellSouth DSL - connects fine one time early
morning, can map and use all network resources. After disconnecting she
can't connect again until next day. All subsequent attempts fail with
Error 721.

I sent a notebook running Win2000 Pro home with Laura and it connects
perfectly.

John: WinXp Home on BellSouth DSL - connects fine, can map and use all
network resources.

Freddy: WinXp Pro on BellSouth DSL - All attempts fail with Error 721.

TX office:
Matt, Keith, and Paul: WinXp Pro: Occasionally can connect once in
morning. All subsequent attempts fail with Error 721
Server: Win2000 Pro: Connects fine every time, can map and use all
network resources.

All client PCs were configure the same (verified). All client PCs could
connect fine to RRAS on NT4, SP6 server running similarly configured
RRAS at our old office.

Possibilities:

T1 issues - BellSouth has run extensive tests on our T1 and found no
problems. We also have no problems running other apps over the T1
(browsing and email, remote access to other sites, FTP and web hosting).

DSL problems - I have asked the users to have their DSL lines tested,
but the fact that Win2K machines connect OK indicates the probllem is
not with connectivity.

Xp - Well, yeah, but what? And why only in some cases and not all?
