I am running Vista 64 on a quad core 64 system. Media Player is version
11.0.6001.7000, which MS tells me is the latest. I have some old ASF audio
files that I was always able to listen to previously on my XP Pro system, but
now I get an error on my new system stating that I cannot listen to them
because I do not have this codec. The problem is that I have tried to find a
download for this codec, but all of the ones I find are for XP and older.
Can MS help me find one of these or can they tell me when one will be
available and who will have it? There are a lot of blog entries that I have
seen on this subject expressing a lot of disappointment, so I think it would
be a good idea for MS to address this.

Wow, MetaSound, crazy.

This codec is owned by Voxware. You could potentially get a decoder here
from them, but I believe they discontinued this codec back in 1998 or so.

There is at least one extremely bad bug Voxware which has led Vista to
deliberately not load the current version of Voxware in that doing so will
cripple multimedia on your system. (Read: app loads Voxware accidentally
during ACMEnumerate, app crashes.)

As such the appropriate but unfortunate thing to do would be to reencode the
content to use a different codec that does not have memory handling bugs.

Alternatively you could pursue with Voxware a fixed rerelease of MetaSound
that did not have this issue. I don't know what their level of dedication
to this code is, but that'd be the other place to start if you wanted
Voxware content to be viable moving forwards. =\
