Does anyone know where I can find some freeware voting software? I know the
request is somewhat unusual, but I want to run an Australian Idol night with
my friends and allow people to vote for their favourites using the computer.

I know there are some freeware resources out there for quizess and polls.
Just set up an XAMMP server (or any other webserver for your taste) find a
freeware polling script of your preferred server-sided language set up a
webpage and your off. IMHO it has a number of advantages:

1) you can either run the server and client on one single computer (for
home-voting), create a lan with computers for voting (if it is a members
only festival) of make it world wide by hosting it with an ISP.

2) Most polling scripts are quite sophisticated, so you will have an result
right after the votings, and ou could even show a running score.

3) e-mail adresses / IP number log and other tools can be used to limiting
the number of fotes from a single user.

Good luck,

I'm not doing this online. After the performances are all completed. Each
guest steps forward in turn and votes for their favourite using the same
computer. (I've set the computer up as a karaoke machine. Once the
performances are done, I would minimize media player and switch to the
voting program.
