after computer repair, i now have two volumes of xp home edition on my
computer, one that works and one that doesn't, can the volume of xp that no
longer works be safely removed?

In XP, press WinKey-Break,(or start/run 'sysdm.cpl'), Advanced Tab, "Start
Up and Recovery" area, Settings button, then edit the old line out with the
'edit' button (looks the same as the startup menu). Reboot, and delete the
files for the old OS. Don't format C:, you need stuff in C: root.
(Be sure the 'default=...' line is the correct one.)
