Hi,

Is it possible to disable the beep you get when you
change the volume?

Also does the volume control have shortcuts?

Thanks, Jamie

Hi, Jamie.
Is it possible to disable the beep you get when you
change the volume?

Here's one way: Go to Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Sounds.
In the Program events box, under Windows, change the Default Beep to from
whatever it is now (Windows XP Ding.wav?) to None. I've just found this and
tested it, but I haven't looked around to see what other activities use this
Default Beep, so use this with care. Maybe you could change it to another
distinctive sound and operate for a while to see if you hear that same sound
in some other situation.
Also does the volume control have shortcuts?

Not sure what you mean by this. Just clicking on the icon in the
Notification Area (which I still call the SysTray) pops it up. Is that not
short enough for you? If you don't see the icon there, go back to the
Control Panel\Sounds and Audio Devices and check the box on the Volume tab
to Place volume icon in the taskbar.

If you are getting a beep from the system when you change the volume, the
registry entries for your default sound (the ding.wav) needs to be fixed.
See MVP Kelly Theriot's page about this:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_d.htm
(Scroll down to "Ding Wav" on that page for info on the problem and the
directions for carrying out the fix).

The volume control icon can be displayed in the notification area:
Control Panel(classic view)> Sounds and Audio> Volume. Place check in box
next to "Place volume icon in the taskbar."

OR you could copy the existing shortcut in the start menu (under
Accessories> Entertainment) to someplace more handy.

OR create a new shortcut with the following in the target line of the
shortcut's properties: %SystemRoot%\System32\sndvol32.exe

Thanks, but I would like no sound on changing the volume,
now I just get a different sound, and sorry, I meant
Keyboard shortcut.

Thanks, Jamie

Jamie, the default volume control makes a ding when changing the sound
level. Sorry but I don't know of any way to turn off that default sound
event in Volume Controls. Since it is tied to the "default sound" event,
using Control Panel> Sounds to change this to None, should work. However,
you will probably lose this audible signal when some warning and error
messages pop up as well.

If you have a multimedia keyboard with volume control keys, that will bring
up a different gauge for volume level and it does not ding. If your sound
hardware offers an alternative mixer/volume interface, may want to give
that a try. It may not "ding" like the one from Windows.
