Just wondering if anyone knows how to restore this control in the bottom
tray of Windows XP. It's been there since the beginning but simply
dissapeared one day after I turned the PC on.

click start - control panel - sounds and audio devices - check box to allow
icon on tool bar. Syntek

Control Panel | Sounds | on the Volume tab check 'Place volume icon in the
taskbar'. There are variations so it may not be exactly like this but
you'll find it.

In Joseph Anctil had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

In addition to the other people's advice...

Yes, turn it back on. If it's on and not showing then turn it off and then
turn it back on. Then stop using a registry cleaner or be more careful. I
had a long (and I mean very long) thread with someone that ended in private
mail about it and finally we figured out that it was being eaten by his
registry cleaner. Since then, when asked, everyone who's had it go missing
has been using a registry cleaner. Not even always the same one...
