volume control while logged off or locked

Hello,
I just received my new Compaq N620c laptop. One thing
that is different from my N600c is volume control. When
the machine is logged in and locked, or is not logged in
at all, I cannot control volume using the volume up/down
buttons on the laptop. This is particularly frustrating
when logging in at the library as I cannot lower volume
before everyone within range hears the first few measures
of Beethoven's 5th, my startup wav.

Any ideas?

Brian,

Two things: 1st, an easy solution but you won't have any startup sound:

Remove the association of that .wav file in the "Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties" in the Control Panel, click on the "Sounds" tab and in Program
Events, Windows choose "Start Windows" and disassociate that .wav file.

Second: (harder solution)
Open up Windows Sound Recorder, find the .wav sound and load it into Windows
Sound Recorder. Then click on "Effects" and lower the volume by 25%. Play
the file and continue to adjust as necessary. Then save it as a different
name (so you save the original). Then change the association of that .wav
file in the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" in the Control Panel,
click on the "Sounds" tab and in Program Events, Windows choose "Start
Windows" and change the .wav file accordingly.
