I just received my sons old computer with Windows XP home edition and I have
the following problem:
When I boot-up and shutdown the computer I can hardly hear the sound even
though the advanced volume controls is on max.
I also tried playing some music with RealOne Player and I can vaugly hear
the sound. I know the mute setting works.
What am I doing wrong and how can I correct the problem?

Are all the sliders set to maximum on the sound control (double click on the
speaker icon in the system tray?)

Do you have powered speakers? If so are they plugged in and the volume
control on them turned up?

If they are non-powered speakers, that may be your issue. Many computers
don't have the "power" to push the non-powered speakers that used to be
popular to the "I want to go cheap crowd" of years past.

Try a different set of powered speakers and make sure they are plugged into
the proper output.

Thankyou very much for your input. I hooked up my ear phones and it worked
great. By the way my son had this computer before he gave it to me and had
powered speakers and they worked fine.
