Hi,
I bought my desktop with Windows XP professional
installed. When I try to open the volume control panel
(by selecting advanced from the volume subpanel of the
sounds and audio devices control panel) i get an icon in
the widnows task bar at the bottom of the screen, but the
control panel is nowhere to be found. i can choose to
close it and to minimize and maximize using the icon at
the bottom, but i can't actually see the control panel.
any ideas on how to get it so i can see (and therefore
actually use) the control panel?

thanks a bunch.

Hi, Dan.

Have you tried RIGHT-clicking on the Volume icon in the Notification Area
(near the clock)? Then choose Open Volume Control from the context menu.
At least, that's what works on MY computer.

Hi RC,
Thanks for your post. Same thing happens when i try it
that way. An icon for the control panel shows up at the
bottom of the screen on the windows task bar (and if i
check processes it is running), but the control panel is
nowhere to be found on the screen. if i choose the move
option by right clicking on the task bar icon, the cursor
goes to the upper left hand corner of the screen (so i am
assuming that the control panel must think that it's off
the screen to the upper left). but i can't actually move
it. it's very strange.

Hi, Dan.

I can't quite visualize what you are describing. There are probably some
differences in what we see because of different sound cards. I have AC97 on
my EPoX motherboard, plus a Sound Blaster Live! card.

I assume you have already tried clicking Start | Control Panel | Sounds and
Audio Devices.

If your problem is an off-the-screen window, there are a couple of things
you can try. One is to adjust your display properties to a larger size to
see if you can see the corner of your control panel and drag it back. The
other is to use the keyboard arrows. Right-click on the minimized-program
icon on the Taskbar, then click Move. Then use your keyboard arrow keys to
move the window to where you can see it; from there, you can use either the
keyboard our your mouse to finish the job.

RC,

You made my day! The arrow key did the trick. The
control panel was stuck off the screen in the upper left
corner. This has been frustrating me for months. Thanks
so much.

Have a good one.

Glad I could help, Dan. And thanks for posting back with that information.
It might help the next person who comes here with a similar problem.
