Volume control icon

In Jan. 2004 I installed XP, home, and since that time I
do not have a volume control icon, and can not turn up
the volume when I play a CD.
How do I get the icon back that I had on Windows 98 ?

Go to Control Panel/Sound And Audio Devices
Make sure "Place volume icon in taskbar" is checked.
