Running XP Home, SP2.
The volume control icon doesn't appear when I boot. The box is checked
in Crtl Panel, and if I disable it and apply, and then enable it and
apply, it appears.

I found the following SaveSettings.reg registry somewhere and after
running it the problem went away for a day or two, and now it's back
again.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000001

Does anyone have a permanent fix for this minor frustration?

Actually, to disable the policy of "not saving settings", it should read:

"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

To display the volume control icon in the notification area
Open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel.
Volume tab | Select the Place volume icon in the taskbar
check box | Click Apply | Click OK

If you get this error:
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.
