Hi All

I know we had a poll a while back about who uses voice over IP, but I am only just thinking about getting it.

I wondered what hardware would be the best to get, any ideas?

Thanks
Toriel

It all depends on how you plan on using it really - are you thinking about using it as a landline replacement, or just for the occasional call?

as ian says.

If your heading down the VoIP route you'll need to signup with VoIP provider such as BT. The service provider you select will on most occasions supply the necessary hardware.

Tons of info here.

The occasional call to start with.

I thought about getting one which I could use as a normal phone as well, if you can do that.

If it works well I would use it more and more as my friends and family get it.

I have seen phones with USB on and a box (not sure how it works though)

I will mention that you only need a VoIP provider if you want to make calls to none VoIP users. If you are making VoIP to VoIP calls there's plenty of free software about. see above link.

Toriel,

if you go through a provider as i mentioned before, the people you calling can be on standard telephones.

Thanks Techy and Ian

I looked at the link which was really usefull and have bought an Olympia Dual phone 9211 IP.

It is a corless, DECT and VOIP phone so I can use it on the normal BT line or Skype.

So far I have only used it with Skype, but it seems really good.

Thanks again
Toriel
