Can some one tell me why I can talk on messenger with a computer that on my
linksys 4 port router but when I try to talk to a friend blocks away, he can
here me but I can't here him. we can see each other ok. He can talk to other
people but not with me...Is it a setting on the router thats causing this
problem Thanx, Brian
 
Greetings Brian,

Firstly, make sure both you and your contact have gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning
Wizard in Messenger. To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then
Audio Tuning Wizard, then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices.

Then, both you and your contact should verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall isn't on -- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view
click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that
the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type
of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that
Messenger is set to "Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

If that's not the case, and if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP support),
you may need to remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should
be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button,
click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close
Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

Also, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so,
click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try
again.

Hi,

I have the same problem, but I can't even see my "Internet Gateway" heading
at all, even though I can connect fine to the Internet and other computers
on my network. My LAN is connected to the Internetl via LinkSys router, and
I have ZoneAlarm Pro installed, but I typically lower the firewall to Medium
to establish an audio communication. This was all working until recently and
I used to also have the "Internet Gateway" heading. Now it's gone, possibly
since a recent Windows Update. Any thoughts?

These are the setting I use with my linksys BEFW11S4
router I do not use a firewall
other than the router you must have latest firmware,
you must have UPnP Enable on the router to get the Internet Gateway to
appear in view network connections
And the router to appear in My Network Places
UPnP Enable/Disable radio button in on the password tab in the router
setting,

I have found that with lisksys routers is that you must a have universal
plug and play installed as well internet gateway device discovery and
control client, go to control panel, add or remove programs, windows
components, networking services, click on details and install
if they are already installed in control panel go to, administrative tools,
services, and look for universal plug and play device, and see if it started
if it is set to start automatic change to manual right click on it go
properties startup type and from drop down box select manual and do the same
for SSDP Discovery service you may have to reboot after reboot you should
see your router in my network places and in view network connections you
will see internet gateway if this fails to work try uninstalling and
reinstalling universal plug and play and internet gateway device discovery
