i recently clean reinstalled XP on my machine and now find that that whereas
before i had an application called AVRack which did voice recording and
playback of tracks i now have no way of voice recording. should there be
anything on the XP CDrom and if so how do i get at it?

There is a called "Sound Recorder" provided in XP, but it is basically a
toy. Low level of usefulness.

AVRack not part of XP. You got AVRack with your sound card or downloaded
it. Check your library of CD's search Google for a download site.
