Voice recognition has always been temperamental with microphones, even more
so with Vista. In previous versions of Windows I could use the microphone on
my web cam to talk to the computer; when Vista came out it put a stop to
that. So I purchased a LiveChat wireless microphone - like you use for
mobile phones. That was a complete waste of money because the speech engine
couldn't hear a word I said. Finally I went for a LiveChat USB headset and
that solved the problem. Strange thing now is, since I installed the beta of
service pack 1 (I don't recommend that you install it) my web cam microphone
has started to work with speech recognition again
Check the recording option in Sound (control panel) to make sure that the
headset you are using is set as default.
