I know that it is possible to shut off the voice greeting but I have not been
able to figure it out on my own. I am running windows XP professional. Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much -

Hi,

Go to START > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and click the
"Sounds" tab. Then scroll down and change the sounds for "Exit Windows" and
"Start Windows".

Incidentally, I would be interested to hear from you if your log-on sounds
actually announce the time of day like "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon" and
"Good Evening" as this is something I would like to do.

Cheers

You can actually have a voice greeting on start and shut-down? I thought
it was only the windows sounds that came with XP.

That's true, but you can record your own messages to replace the
ones windows uses. They're in the .../Media folder.

just find those sounds you can find such on the internet,
and configure windows sounds

I think it would be cool to have the computer "ask" for your password
via a wave file
upon start up. I know, I'm asking for a lot.

OK fellows,
Get out your microphone and record a wave file of whatever greeting
you want using the built in windows recorder. Move the file into your
windows media folder. Go to control panel and select sounds. Find the
sound you just recorded in the list and assign it to whatever event
you want.

Yes, but to add to that, the sounds can be in any folder you want. You can
navigate to the appropriate folder in Control Panel | Sounds.
