I am using Norton 2001 on an XP machine. It would appear to be not
compatible with Norton VMI data and will not download it. What is VMI data
and is it necessary to the protection of my system. It accepts virus
defintion updates.

Probably means your version is antiquated. It isn't supported so you
won't get any program updates. You might still get virus signature
updates but you won't get any updates for the program itself. Getting
last year's version is usually pretty cheap.

So the question remains - am I protected adequately by virus definition data
alone? Again - what is VMI data?
I have a number of months left from my last renewal and would like to use it
up before updating.

I haven't had a version 2001 of NAV for quite some time. You'll have to
visit Symantec's web site to see what new functionality has been added
to their latest version to see if those features provide to you what you
would consider essential virus protection.

VMI wasn't mentioned in their help (for NAV 2003) nor in their
knowledgebase site. Probably the best place to ask is Symantec. You
can use their support web form to submit a question. They usually
answer within 3 days.

This is the anti-virus message board and nobody can tell me what Norton VMI
data is?? Every time you click on live update one of the items it looks to
update is VMI Data and nobody seems, including me, to know what it is.

You could buy last year's version (2003) for $10 at eBay.

Virtual Machine Interface data I would guess, AV does need to run deep.
