Although the two columns I am comparing in my VLOOKUP look
exactly the same (for example, both say MMM 001), they
came from different sources and so must look different to
Excel. I had gotten a tip from someone once that the way
to overcome the problem is to do a "Text to Columns" and
in the 3rd screen of the Wizard, change the value
from "General" to "Text". I've tried this and it is not
working.

Hi Michelle,

It's possible you may have leading or trailing spaces in one column or the
other.

You can use this formula to see if the data is a match.

=A1=B1 will return TRUE if identical or FALSE if, say, one has a leading or
trailing space.

Could it be as simple as having a double space between the characters or
having a space on the end?

If that doesn't work, does the vlookup work if you copy the source MMM
001 characters into the cell apparently containing identical data in
the range you are looking up?

If that doesn't work try selecting the cells you are looking up in the
left hand column of your range and hitting F2 and enter.
