HI,
VLAN tagging can be a very confusing issue. I have a
Marconi switch that supports VLAN tagging and this is what
i know.
1. If you device connected to the switch is 802.1Q
compliant (VLAN) then you tag the port. I.E. if you
computers nic supports VLAN 802.1Q then tag the port.
2. If you device connected does not support 802.1Q tagging
then leave the port untagged. This will allow packets from
all configured VLANS to pass to the device.
My local computer's nic's do not support VLAN 802.1Q
tagging, so all of my ports that have a computer attached
are untagged. This is so the nic can receive data from all
VLANS.
If i have a port that connects to another switch, then the
port is tagged. This is because the switch supports 802.1Q
VLANS.
My advice is, switch to switch = tagged ports
Switch to computer = untagged ports.
