I have a desktop running Win2K Professional. When the machine boots up, there
are what look like icons on the desktop, for things like "Poker", "Bingo",
"Website Hosting", etc. These aren't really icons- there'sno right-click
menu, etc. What they are, are links to websites. In Task Manager, IEXPLORE
shows as running. If I end that process, these thing disappear, only to
return at the next log-in. It almost seems like IE is running in a
transparent mode except for these link icons and is overlaid overthe desktop.
I've run Norton AV 2004 full system scan, AdAware and Spybot. I have the
latest security updates from microsoft. Still can't find and solve the
problem.
Also, when I start IE while these things arestill on the desktop, I get a
double search toolbar at the bottom of my screen (maybe an unrelated problem?)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi,

While you've stated that you've run Adaware and Spybot, have you considered
the possibility of BHO's? These browser helper objects can cause the issues your
seeing, and may be responsible for the toolbar.

First, open your control panel, and navigate to your
Internet Options.

Click on the Advanced Tab, and uncheck the

'Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)'.

*You may opt to renable them once you have the situation in hand.

After unchecking the box, download BHOCop. It's available, free, here:

http://support.honour.ca/bin/bhocop.zip

After installing the program, you can use it to selectively remove all
unfamiliar BHO's (or toolbars).

Further to running SpyBot and AdAware, you may also want to consider
CWShredder - it catches things AdAware may have missed. The latest version is
available here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

If you continue to have problems, please do not hesitate to post back,

Best regards,

Altrus

I've followed those suggestions, and that toolbar is gone; however, the phony
icons are still there on boot-up and IEXPLORE.EXE still shows as a running
process on boot-up as well. As before, ending the process gets rid of the
'icons'.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom
