Note:

Windows version seems to be only for "Microsoft Windows 2000/XP using
OpenGL".

OpenGL is a cross-platform standard for 3D rendering and 3D hardware
acceleration.
The software runtime library ships with all Windows, MacOS, Linux and
Unix systems.
Almost all consumer graphic cards released since 1999 support OpenGL.

Yes, you have to register (free).
I.e. you must provide name and E-mail address and answer a few questions
about your use for this program.

It costs no $$$.
Many people in this group do find free registration annoying but deal
with it when the software seems to be worth it.
Most will agree that free registerware is on topic.
You are advised to never provide your real name and address, etc.
In case an e-mail address is required to send you registration info, use
an additional e-mail address that you can easily dispose of, to make
sure you can stop eventual spam.
You might consider to provide genuine answers to eventual additional
questions that might help the author, like: "in what sort of environment
are you going to use the software", "what country are you from", etc.
Windows version seems to be only for "Microsoft Windows 2000/XP using
OpenGL".

At least version 1.7.2 can be downloaded, which runs on Win95 upwards,
according to : http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/vmd-1.7.2/

<quote>
Since the user interface changes merely correct a deficiency in prior
versions of VMD on the Windows platform, no documentation updates are
necessary, and you will want to refer to the VMD 1.7.1 documentation.
</quote>

Following this up:
http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/vmd-1.7.1/winrelnotes.html

<quote>
* Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 installations should be
trivial. Windows 98/NT/2000 ship with all necessary software
components.
* Windows 95 users MUST have Winsock2 and OpenGL installed on their
machines in order to run VMD.
</quote>

As for the current version 1.8.2, it indeed says Windows 2000/XP, but I
wonder if that might be a misnomer.
I am surprised that this runs on many platforms, but for this version
suddenly Windows 2000/XP should be required.

Hi;
Was in the Bio-Molecular field a few years ago before retiring.

That's a renowned and serious outfit.
The program is of the highest quality and offers capabilities I never dared
dream of.
It is valid to the n'th degree and utterly up-to-date.

Gave them name and particulars (all real) when I grabbed a previous version
quite a few months ago.
Went back to update a few times.
Never been bothered in anyway.
Not even a "gentle" reminder.

You're dealing with serious research(ers).

Mikey,
Just curious, what OS and version of that OS are you using?

Hi;
Specially to: John C.
Using both of XP Home and Pro w. Sp1 and all the patches.

Rats. I was hoping that you had 98 or ME. Kind of hate to install it
if I can't know for sure that it'll run on my system (ME). At any
rate, I've emailed the authors for clarification in that regard.
Thanks for getting back to me, Mikey.

They got back to me. Told me that although the basic features would
work on 98/ME, they wouldn't support it's use with those versions and
that they were focusing on more current versions of the OS (quote
2000/XP unquote). They said that this was because MS had dropped
support for 98 and they thought that ME was next on the chopping block.

I thanked them for getting back to me and said thanks anyway.
