Matt

Whenever I attempt to start IE 6 on a specific users
account I get a runtime error stating:

Runtime Error!

Program C:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way.

any ideas what causes the problem, and any solutions?

Hi Matt,

If you get a C++ runtime error whenever you try to open internet explorer or
my computer or an explorer window, you have likely been infected with e2g
spyware or its variants.

SpyBot S&D searches your harddisk for Spyware and Adware

&

Adaware (similar)

(Remember to perform a Webupdate to have the latest definitions installed)

It could be caused by a parasite or even Java.
From a previous post.

Runtime!
"Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\explore.exe"
The application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.
It appears that I have both Java(Sun) and MS VM on the PC. After
disabling/unchecking Java(Sun) the runtime error ceased in IE6. Source:

Make sure it's not some new parasites.
