The installation stopped in the "Installing updates" phase with error
message "Windows could not set the offline locale information Errorcode
0x80FF0000"

This was a completely new install on a new disk from a retail Vista Ultimate
SP1 DVD. The ONLY odd thing I did along the way was to use an Nvidia MCP73
AHCI driver from a USB key.

Any suggestions?

I restarted it and it got further the second time but ended in "completing
installation" in a tight little ground loop.

So I've reluctantly concluded that I'll do the post-install switch to AHCI.
Only problem is now it thinks it's mid-install and refuses to boot off the
DVD to start over. It just can't boot off the hard disk either. When I get
home I'll sort that out somehow.

You've just got to love this stuff. What's the difference between MacOS and
Windows? Fewer devices and device drivers but the ones that exist actually
work.

I think once I get it to boot off the DVD again, I'll go that route and
configure AHCI post-install. Now it's in some odd limbo that can't boot the
HD but won't boot the DVD... When I get home, I'll have to figure out how to
un-wedge it from this little crack.

Interesting you should say that. I just got a Macbook Pro and am totally
confused by it - not least the fact that it.....well, WORKS!! and does so
without a drive full of drivers, inf's and such like - in fact I haven't a
clue how the Mac manages to work!!! baffling
