Vista/XP Networking Problem

I just got a new laptop with Vista and am trying to do file and printer
sharing with other XP computers on the network. Two are fine, but the third
is asking for a user name and password. I have uninstalled ZoneAlarm and AV
software; set up user accounts for both computers; run the network wizard for
file and printer sharing; enabled Netbios over TCP/IP in the IP ver. 4
properties. Have no idea why the other two don't have a problem, but this one
does. All have the same workgroup name. I can do remote desktop connection,
but would prefer file and printer sharing.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

It's an XP server (PC) as are two others on the network. It's asking for a
user ID and password, but none work. No problems accessing the shared files
on the Vista laptop.

Cathy,

You say "the third is asking for a user name and password". The third is
running which OS? And connecting to which computer when "asking for a user name
and password""?

To access a Vista server from an XP client, you have to
* Set the Network Location Type to "Private". This implies that your
computers are secure, behind a perimeter firewall or a NAT router, and opens the
personal firewall for file sharing.
* Check / set "Password protected sharing" (PPS). Disabling PPS is the
equivalent of enabling Simple File Sharing, in Windows XP.
* Setup shared folders and printers. If you enabled PPS, you should setup
access for individual users. If you disabled PPS, you setup access for "Guest"
or "Everyone".

OK, you have to consider the computer that it's trying to connect to. Remember
Windows XP comes in 2 flavours - Home and Pro. And Pro might have Simple, or
Advanced, File Sharing. And if AFS is used, it might be setup for Guest, or for
non-Guest, file sharing.

And what ever account (Guest or non-Guest), make sure that the account that you
think that you're using is properly prepared for network access.

Thank you!! I'm not sure if it was unchecking Simple File Sharing or the net
user command, but all the printers and shared folders are now showing up.

I'll bet the latter. Your symptoms fit inability to authenticate because the
account wasn't fit for network access.
