vista xp network problems

My new desktop with vista and my laptop with xp cannot see each other on
network nor can I print from xp laptop on printer attached to desktop xp. I
tried downloading LLTD responder for xp but I get a message that (the file)
"is not a valid WIN 32 application). How do I get past this step to get to
later recommended ones?

The LLTD Responder for Windows XP is useful, but it won't solve your actual
problems.

I'd look first for a personal firewall, or other security program, blocking file
sharing traffic. What anti-virus program do you use?

Then, I'd diagnose the problem, using logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig
/all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(Download browstat, and note how to start a command window, in Vista, to run
browstat!):
